OUR STORY

Blume Coffee Traders began in 2018 with a simple goal: to make specialty coffee approachable, exciting, and, most of all, delicious for everyday brewers.

Our Abbotsford roastery is home to our coffee bar and retail space, located where our coffee cart once stood. Community is deeply important to us - so we share our roasting space with other Melbourne cafés as part of a co-roasting cooperative. We’re also lucky enough to be home to a small recording studio.

WHAT WE BELIEVE IN

Our Mission

SEASONAL SOURCING

How we buy our coffee

Our roastery is named Blume; Scottish Gaelic for ‘Bloom’

We named it this, because like the all coffees we source, the blooms of each season fluctuate intrinsically with the environment they are connected to.

Full of potential and vitality.

Changing and adapting.

Regenerating from the seasons that have come before.

As the seasons change around us, so do the coffee harvests around the world. We are committed to sourcing our coffees in tune with these seasons.

Showcasing them as they are at they’re fullest and truest.

This means we will not have the same coffee available year round. Instead we source under three pillars or expressions.

BROWN: comforting flavours of chocolates, caramels, toffees and nuts.

SWEET: Clean, balanced and round flavours that taste of plant or place.

FRUITY: Bright and Expressive often acid driven and a bit wild.

Every now and again we will showcase very special ‘one of one’ coffees in limited quantities.

Angus Gibbs

Angus began his food journey as a teenage kitchen hand on the Mornington Peninsula. At 20, he took over a six-month lease at Somers General Store, where coffee first caught his attention.

Angus worked as a barista at Prahran Pool and Kanteen on the Yarra. His path led directly to St Ali, where he started as a barista before moving into their roastery to learn the craft.

In 2010, Angus developed an international multi-roaster program and micro-lot blend series at Deadman Espresso. He then joined Seven Seeds as a barista and team leader, focusing on community education. His hunger to understand coffee's full journey took him to green coffee importer Silo as a warehouse and lab assistant.

After a pivot to wine retail with Black Hearts and Sparrows, while studying commercial photography, Angus moved to the UK. There, he worked at the renowned Violet Cakes before joining Square Mile Coffee. Starting as a production assistant, he quickly rose to production manager and joined the quality control team learning from roaster/buyer/founder Anette Moldvaer.

With this rich tapestry of experience across many links in coffee's chain, Angus founded Blume Coffee Traders in 2017, bringing together his passion for quality, community, and craft. With the goal to make modern coffee simple, accessible and most importantly delicious.
