 RED GRAPE, ORANGE, CANDY, SMOOTH

Every year we can’t wait to announce the beginning of the Rwandan Coffee season. Not only are the coffees incredible, but the stories behind them are rich and complex.

This year we're super excited to announce a new partnership bringing us coffees from a new region in Rwanda’s southern region, Huye District.
Imizi Coffee is not only a new import partner for us, but are new importers themselves. Patrick & Raissa are both young entrepreneurs from the Rwandan diaspora, passionate about combining their pasts with their futures and connecting Australian roasters to coffee from their home, staying connected to their roots.

Simbi Coffee Washing Station was established by Abdul Rudahunga in 2013 and placed 9th in the 2013 Cup of Excellence, an amazing achievement for a newcomer.

The farms that feed the washing station range in altitude between 1800-2300masl, and individual farms tend to be less than 1 hectare in area or 170 trees per farmer on average. Simbi focuses on sustainability and community development and farmers work as part of a cooperative to share farming methods to assist the community in creating ever-improving coffee.

In 2023, around 90 people worked at Simbi, of which roughly 80% were women. The importance of this is due to a large number of men being killed during the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi, creating a larger population of women than men. Traditionally, men worked to serve the household, and women looked after the house, but employing women has helped empower the communities, allowing more significant streams of income into the household.

At the end of every year, Abdul organises a community get-together to celebrate the year’s successes.

This coffee is deliciously sweet, smooth and very complex, with notes of orange and grape. We love it as a pour over brew!
